Last summer over 100 locations throughout the U.S. hosted AFA CyberCamps.
CyberPatriot anticipates that even more locations will be approved to host camps this summer!
Interested Parents and Students, please read the following Q&A to better understand our program offering:
Q: Why Attend an AFA CyberCamp?
Do you have an interest in cybersecurity and computers? Are you a beginner and would like to learn more about securing networks and hardening Operating Systems? AFA CyberCamps is the perfect first step towards learning more about cybersecurity! Many students that attend AFA CyberCamps go on to join a CyberPatriot National Defense Competition team during the school year. Get a head start on your STEM career and experience what makes CyberPatriot the best National Youth Cyber Education Program!
Q: How old do I have to be to attend an AFA CyberCamp?
There is no age requirement, however it is recommended due to the level of curriculum that students be in 7th-12th grade.
Q: Do I need any special skills or previous knowledge to attend an AFA CyberCamp?
Camp attendees do not need to have any special skill set to participate in an AFA CyberCamp. Some very basic knowledge of computer hardware (knowing how to use a mouse, start a monitor, can identify Windows start button icon, etc.) is helpful but not necessary. A basic English reading level is essential as many individual and group labs and activities are written directives and students must work alone and with small groups to accomplish tasks. The most important skill to possess is the passion to learn and a positive attitude!
Q; How can I find a camp near me?
CyberPatriot provides the curriculum and images for an AFA CyberCamp. Organizations interested in hosting a camp apply on our website and once approved are responsible for all local logistics of the camp including securing a location, finding instructors and registering students for the camp. Once a camp host is approved, the hosting site will have the option to allow us to display their contact information for interested parties. Please Note: Not all camps will open their location to the public and may decline our offer to advertise for their camp. Any and all contact information will be updated daily on the 'Approved 2017 AFA CyberCamps' webpage once all applications have been approved. CyberPatriot will post a live map with contact links (where applicable) as well as a text list of the contact information.
Q: What if there are no camps in my area?
Camps are held in various locations throughout the United States. If you do not find a camp in your immediate area, there may be a camp accepting students in a nearby community. Not all cities and states will have camp locations, all depends on the organizations that apply to host an AFA CyberCamp.
Q: Why doesn't the camp in my area have any contact information?
Host locations are offered the option to advertise their camp registration information on the CyberPatriot website. Some locations will not offer public registration and choose not to share their contact information. The 'Approved 2017 AFA CyberCamps' webpage will be updated daily as we receive contact information from camp sites looking to recruit students for their summer program. We recommend to check back often as more information may be available as the summer progresses.
Q: There was a camp in my area last year, why not this year?
Each year different organizations choose to apply to host an AFA CyberCamp. Some organizations may have previously hosted a camp and apply for another year. The CyberPatriot Program Office approves registration applications on a rolling basis and we cannot guarantee which locations will apply or be approved.
Q: How can I register for a camp?
CyberPatriot does not register students for AFA CyberCamps. Each individual location has a host organization that is responsible for their own recruitment and registration process. Once CyberPatriot's host registration is closed (on May 1), the CyberPatriot Program Office will advertise on the 'Approved 2017 AFA CyberCamp' page contact information where parents and students can find a location near them. Interested parties must contact the camp locations directly, keeping in mind that not all approved camps will provide registration information to be shared.
Q: Is there a cost to attend an AFA CyberCamp?
Host locations may charge a fee for their camp programs. Approved camp locations may recoup the cost they paid for the AFA CyberCamp kit and materials but are not permitted to make a profit off of the camp program. Costs will vary among the locations and host organizations. Interested parties will need to contact the location directly.
Q: What if I previously attended an AFA CyberCamp or I have competed in the CyberPatriot Competition?
AFA CyberCamps are specifically for novice students with little or no experience with CyberPatriot, cybersecurity and system administration. The curriculum is a basic level introduction to the skills and topics utilized in the CyberPatriot Competition. Students are discouraged from returning to a standard AFA CyberCamp but are encouraged to join a CyberPatriot team with their school or community organization.
Summer 2018 CyberPatriot will be offering an Advanced Camp! Ideal for students that have previously attended an AFA CyberCamp or that have competed in the CyberPatriot Competition. We will debut the Advanced AFA CyberCamp Program Summer 2018. Stay tuned!
As a courtesy, please do not contact the CyberPatriot Program Office regarding approved CyberCamp locations until registration closes on May 1.
